Course Description:

The 4-HR Basic Rigger training is designed to fulfill the training requirements for Basic Rigger person under the new OSHA requirement 1926.1400, as well as to provide the class attendee an overview of hazards related to rigging and in the establishment of safe and proper rigging practices.

Each participant will be required to take a written exam on the applicable OSHA standards as well a practical exam of all required signaling.

Course Topics:

Basic Rigger Description (2 hours):

  • Review of regulations and standards; including compliance with OSHA’s new regulation 1926.1400
  • Safe rigging practices, procedures and basic principles
  • Proper hitch selection and how to use rigging safely
  • Identifying rigging hazards
  • Procedures for working with cranes near excavations and power lines
  • Understanding rigging charts
  • How to calculate sling stress and determining the weight of a load
  • Safely understanding dynamic load effects and the proper use for hoists
  • Interpretation of rigging charts and identifying rigging hardware

Signal Person Description (2 Hours):

  • Review of regulations and standards; including compliance with OSHA’s new regulation 1926.1400
  • Identifying signal person responsibilities
  • How to property signal with hand signals, audible signals and electronic devices for: tower and overhead cranes and mobile cranes in operation and in transit
  • Understanding crane limitations
  • Procedures for working with cranes near excavations and power lines
  • How to safely signal a crane hoisting personnel
  • Safely understanding boom deflection, two blocking, shock loading, dynamic forces and center of gravity

Who Should Attend:

Any personnel involved with the interaction of cranes and hoisting of materials in conjunction with the crane operator

Regulatory Requirements:

OSHA 29 CFR 1926.1400, API & ASME standards.
